Itihaas Shaheedi Baba Deep Singh Ji - Translation from Sri Gurmukh Parkash

30 Kattak marks the Shaheedi Purab of the great Brahamgiani, Scholar and Warrior Shaheed Baba Deep Singh Ji. The Sangat is well aware of the story of Baba Ji’s Shaheedi, and how for the love and satkaar of Sri Darbar Sahib Ji, Baba Ji fought with their head held in their right hand and khanda in their left, until they arrived at Sri Darbar Sahib and left their body. However, one aspect of Baba Ji’s life which may be less known about was their amazing spiritual life and Baba Ji’s connection to Santhia. As a child, Baba Ji was brought to the sanctuary of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji in Anandpur Sahib. In a short period, Baba Ji mastered languages such as Gurmukhi, Sanskrit, Braj Bhasha and Persian. Where it is a great task to master one language Baba Ji gained the Vidhya of all these languages in just three years, such was the Kirpa of Guru Sahib and Baba Ji’s dedication and love for Vidhya. When Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji started the writing of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji at Damdama Sahib taking 9 months and 9 days, Bhai Mani Singh Ji Shaheed was blessed to be the scribe, and Baba Deep Singh Ji was given the Seva of making the ink, kalam (bamboo pens) and preparing the kaagaz (paper) for Bhai Sahib Ji to use. Baba Ji along with Bhai Mani Singh Ji was part of the 48 Singhs who learnt the Santhia (correct pronunciation) and Arth (meanings) of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji directly from Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji. Afterwards, Guru Gobind Singh Ji gave the duty of continuing the teaching of this Brahm Vidhya to Bhai Mani Singh Ji and Baba Deep Singh Ji. Bhai Mani Singh Ji was sent to Amritsar Sahib and taught countless Sikhs. After returning from Sri Hazur Sahib Nanded and fighting the Mughals alongside Baba Banda Singh Ji, Baba Deep Singh Ji returned to Damdama Sahib to continue the teaching of Braham Vidhya. This Centre of teaching blessed by Guru Gobind Singh Ji as ‘Guru Ki Kanshi’ became known as ‘Damdama Arthi Wali Taksal’. Alongside the teaching of Santhia and Arth, Baba Deep Singh Ji wrote 4 Saroops of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, which are currently at Sri Akal Thakat Sahib, Sri Hazur Sahib, Sri Patna Sahib and Sri Damdama Sahib. Baba Ji spent all of their time immersed in Gurbani, whether it be teaching Gurbani, writing Gurbani or reading Gurbani. According to Sikh tradition, Baba Ji would do Nitnem of Panj Granthi, 108 Jap Ji Sahib and 101 Jaap Sahibs alongside Jaaps of Chandi di Vaar and Chandi Charitar. The evidence of this amazing Nitnem is in the handwritten Nitnem gutka still preserved at Sri Damdama Sahib, which contains all these Banis . Today let us immerse ourselves in Gurbani as Baba Deep Singh Ji did, whether it is by starting Santhia, delving into the meanings of Gurbani or by increasing our nitnem. Below is a small snippet from Sri Gurmukh Parkash by Sant Giani Gurbachan Singh Ji Khalsa Bhindranwale describing the bravery of Baba Deep Singh Ji in the battlefield:

When the Singhs heard that the Afghan invaders wanted to disrespect Sri Amritsar Sahib, they were full of fury and got ready to fight.

At the time Baba Deep Singh Ji were residing at Guru Kanshi (Sri Damdama Sahib Sabo Ki Talwandi), where they had completed the writing of 5 Saroops of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji (four in Gurmukhi and one in Arabic script), and also built a Burj (tower) and water well which out of benevolence was open to all.

Hearing the news of the Afghanis advancing towards Sri Darbar Sahib, Baba Ji got ready alongside 500 Singhs. Baba Ji and the Singhs cut across the sandy tracts to reach Taran Taaran via Harike.

Reaching Taran Taaran, the great Singhs fought the 5000 Afghans with bravery.

A fierce battle was fought by the Khalsa and many Khans and Subas were destroyed, when Baba Ji was 3 Koh (1 Koh is around 1.91 Mile) away from Sri Darbar Sahib, they were beheaded by one of the enemies.

Baba Ji placed their head on one palm and fought bravely with their Khanda in the other, seeing Baba Ji the Afghans fled in fear, the Beadbi was hence averted.

Baba Ji offered their head at Sri Darbar Sahib (at this spot is now the Shaheedi Bunga of Baba Deep Singh Ji), they showed the world the power of Naam Abhiaas and the Amrit of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji.
